The harshest inspection position in a building: close range, grazing light, and no shadow to hide a corner in.

Ceiling systems

A ceiling is seen from below, at close range, with lighting designed to graze it. It is the harshest inspection position in a building.

Two systems: flat panels with a shadow gap between them, and coffered panels where the recess itself carries the lighting. Both are made of folded sheet; both are decided by what happens at the corners.

Coffered

Each coffer is pressed or folded with four returns, then joined at the corners. The lighting channel sits in the reveal, which means the reveal is dimensioned from the fixture, not from a nominal.

Flat with shadow gap

Panels on a concealed frame with a constant gap. Simpler to make and harder to get right, because the gap is the only feature and any variation reads as a mistake.

What decides a ceiling

Every corner is joined flat on the floor

Coffers are assembled and checked against a straight edge before packing.

If skippedCorners cut separately arrive open, and grazing light from the reveal shows every one.

The lighting channel comes from the fixture

We ask for the actual fixture drawing and dimension the reveal from it.

If skippedA 5 mm error means the fixture does not fit, and the reveal is opened up on site with a grinder.

Access is designed before fabrication

Access panels are drawn and made as part of the system.

If skippedThe ceiling is closed, and the first service visit cuts a hole in it.

we will talk about the joints.

Grade and finish are a specification. Whether two panels meet cleanly, in one colour, with no cutting on site, is the job.
